About Urinary Tract Infections and Cystitis

What is a UTI?

Different parts of your urinary tract, including your bladder (cystitis), urethra (urethritis), or kidneys (kidney infection) can be affected by urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Bladder infections are very common and not normally serious if treated quickly. However, the infection can cause more serious issues if it spreads to the kidneys. Most UTIs though can be easily treated with antibiotics.

How is a UTI treated?

Nitrofurantoin and Trimethoprim are antibiotics which are used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis and kidney infections.

When nitrofurantoin is taken, the body will filter it from your blood and into your urine. The medicine is concentrated at the site of infection, which is useful if you have a urinary tract infection, however, this means that nitrofurantoin is effective for other types of infection.

How long is it taken for?

You will usually need to take nitrofurantoin for 3 to 7 days if you are taking it to treat a urinary tract infection.
